Although introduced to the United States less than fifty years ago, the Peruvian Paso Horse has been the object of a four hundred fifty year breeding program in Peru.  Bred for its smooth and comfortable ride, this horse had been used for travel between various haciendas and for overseeing the plantation lands.  In the United States, the Peruvian Paso Horse has found its niche among those equine lovers who desire a multi-purpose horse for trail, brood, show and parade, a family-oriented riding horse for all age groups.

The Peruvian Paso Horse has a natural four-beat gait and "termino", which is the outward rolling of the forelegs as the horse strides forward.  No artificial devices or training aids are used to create the gait.  The breed standard calls for a horse ranging in height from 14.1 to 15.2 hands.  The Peruvian Paso Horse comes in all basic solid colors.  It is distinguished by the luxuriously long mane and tail.  Because the breeders did not believe in producing animals with unsuitable dispositions, the modern-day horse has a remarkable even temperament, intelligence and willingness to please.  An inner pride and enthusiasm, a reflection of willingness and energy, is known as "Brio", and provides the "always on parade" manner and attitude.

The Judge looks for the proper execution of the Walk, the Paso Llano and the Sobreando gaits, correct conformation, manners and condition.  Traditional show ring attire includes a poncho, Panama-style hat and white clothing in the old Peruvian style, and the horse is ridden in classic Peruvian tack.  Horses may also be exhibited in English, Western and Plantation tack.  No matter what type of tack, the Peruvian Paso Horse still executes the natural four-beat ground covering gait for which he is famous.

The Peruvian Paso Horse is more than just an investment.  To the aficionado of this breed, the smooth ride and loving disposition are just part of the reason that this beautiful horse becomes not only a prized possession, but the kindest, closest and most beloved friend and family member.
